Staff Profiles

An experienced and enthusiastic teaching team, bringing a very high standard of teaching and learning, and excellent academic results

Head of Department - Miss H Izod

BSc (Hons) Geography, Portsmouth University

I joined RHS in 2015, having previously worked in a range of schools in Kent. I have also taught in Tanzania and traveled widely around East Africa. I am a physical geographer at heart, particularly marine geography but also enjoy teaching about development issues  and social geography. I am immensely proud of the dynamic staff and pupil team in geography, never without its 'buzz'.

I am a tutor in Nelson and Drake house.

Mr R Mann

BA (Hons) Geography, Southampton University

I joined RHS in 2000 after a successful career in offshore finance. I consider myself to be an enthusiastic teacher, highly committed to promoting dynamic and experiential learning, with a view to maximising student outcomes. My catchphrase is “the world is your classroom”, and I have led and supported a range of international tours and geographical fieldwork to varied destinations (eg the annual Iceland study tour). I am passionate about this historic school, having co-authored the book on the its history “RHS -Celebrating 300 Years” and having established the digital archive and Heritage Centre.

I am a long standing Sixth Form tutor and I am currently the longest serving tutor, attached to Hawke House for the last 18 years.

Mrs E McConnell

BA (Hons) Geography and Education, Queen’s University, Belfast.

I joined RHS in 2012, moving across the river from Orwell Park School. I was appointed as housemistress of Blake House and a teacher of geography and sport. I moved to Hood House in 2016 as a tutor and enjoy teaching physical geography within this vibrant and enthusiastic department. I coach junior sport and work with Year 12 on a sports leadership qualification. For recreation, I enjoy playing tennis and badminton and travelling.

Mr H Mackenzie

BA (Hons) Geography, London School Of Economics

Advanced Skills Teacher (Lead Practitioner) Digital Learning

I have been working at RHS since 2014 and alongside working in the geography department, I also look after the digital learning systems at the School. My specialisms and interests within the subject are geo-politics, economics and development but since working at RHS I have been involved in teaching all aspects of the subject. I am a tutor in Raleigh house.

Mrs A Lockyer

BSc (Hons) Kings College London, PGCE University of Cambridge.

I joined the department in September 2017 having had a career break to settle my family into the RHS community. I have taught in five different schools and have been Head of Department in two. I am really enjoying being a part of such a dynamic and forward thinking department. Within the subject, I particularly enjoy teaching development and social geography. For recreation, I enjoy running, playing tennis and holidays with my family.
