Sailing Kit

Please see below for details of the kit that we expect sailors to wear to sessions.

Michaelmas Term

During the Michaelmas term, we see quite a variety of weather conditions. Therefore, we ask that students wear kit which is appropriate to the weather conditions. This may include:

  • Summer wetsuit - 1-3mm thickness
  • Winter wetsuit - 4-6mm thickness
  • Hiking shorts
  • Tech bottoms & tech top
  • Drysuit
  • Dinghy boots or old trainers
  • Gloves
  • Hat

Lent Term

Due to the cold conditions, sailors need to have a good range of protective clothing that they wear during the Lent term. This may include:

  • Winter wetsuit - 4-6mm thickness
  • Drysuit
  • Winter tech bottoms & top
  • Skiff suit or similar
  • Gloves
  • Dinghy boots or similar
  • Hat or balaclava

Summer Term

Students are welcome to wear the following:

  • Summer wetsuit - 1-3mm thickness
  • Technical trousers/shorts/hikers etc & an appropriate top (rash vest, technical top etc)
  • In hot weather, we are happy for students to wear an appropriate top and shorts. Shorts can be of long boardshort length (i.e. just above the knee) and tops must cover shoulders. Please note that school gym shorts are not appropriate for sailing.
  • Dinghy boots or old trainers
  • Gloves
  • Sun cream

The school has wetsuits, spray tops and buoyancy aids which you are welcome to borrow.

Those who are in a group focusing on racing will need a race watch for training and competitions.

For sailors to get the most out of the sessions the least we recommend bringing is a season appropriate pair of dinghy boots, gloves and a hat.

Crewsaver are an ideal brand that balances affordability with quality for those getting in to sailing and are recommended by us as a first port of call for those looking to invest in some sailing kit.

If you need any help choosing sailing kit please contact someone in the Sailing Department.
