Welcome to RHS and your study of GCSE Biology, we follow the Edexcel examination board and utilise the Pearson textbook and resources.
We have covered 2 topics of the GCSE Combined Science specification, on the Natural selection and Genetic Modification (B4) and Health, Disease and the Development of Medicines (B5).
Anyone starting Year 10 doing Separate Science will start the year completing the additional Separate Science Biology lessons that are not covered on the Combined Science specification and then move on the topics as per the Combined Science scheme.
Everyone else will start Year 10 with a quick re-cap of B5 before moving on to cover the topics on Cells and Control (B2), Genetics (B3), Key Concepts in Biology (B1) and finishing the year with Plant Structures and their Functions (B6). The B7-9 topics will then be covered in Year 11.
In order to help you get up to speed, please use the resources below and access the Pearson Active Learn textbook (Combined Science or Biology - depending upon which course you are taking). Further resources and access to exam questions on mark schemes can be found at this link: intranet.royalhospitalschool.org/biology/pupil-resources/edexcel-gcse-biology-new-spec/year-11-revision towards the bottom of the page on the left hand side. It would certainly be advantageous for you to have attempted the questions on the following papers (12.2, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 and 15) and used the corresponding mark schemes to mark your efforts. If you do attempt these, please bring your self marked papers with you to school to hand to your new teacher, this will help them gain a better appreciation of your skills, strengths, weaknesses and areas where you have struggled to learn independently.
Finally, there will be catch up condensed lessons available at either lunchtime or after school in a specialist clinic for you to attend (the exact time and date will be decided based on everyone's availability). These will cover the B4 and B5 content that we taught in Year 9 and will be quick problem solving sessions to address any areas of difficultly you faced in your independent study.
All the best,
